A zookeeper at Chongqing Zoo in China came under attack by two pandas, Yuke and Yu’ai, on Tuesday (April 23) as shocked onlookers watched, according to the Daily Mail.
Video showed the female zookeeper walking inside the enclosure to feed the pandas when they charged toward her and knocked her to the ground. As she tried to fight them off, they overpowered her and pinned her to the ground. They continued to climb over and bite and claw at her arms, legs, and midsection.
She fought back for about a minute and managed to get up as another employee rushed inside to help. One of the pandas started charging toward him as the female zookeeper rushed toward the exit. Both zookeepers managed to escape the enclosure and suffered only minor injuries in the incident.
Authorities said that pandas are usually gentle and docile and rarely attack humans. They have not said what caused the two young pandas to attack the zookeeper.
