June 22 Local Headlines:

A Hancock County man is facing multiple charges after almost biting off the tip of a deputy’s finger Wednesday.  Deputies were serving a warrant for drugs and stolen property at Nicholas Cuevas’ home when he reached for a rifle.  They tackled him, but in the scuffle he bit a deputy’s finger, his other hand was fractured, and another deputy ended up with a sprained ankle.

A family argument led to a deadly crash in Hancock County yesterday that involved 7 vehicles, two were motorcycles.  The group was headed to Louisiana when one of them, Fred Johnson, allegedly pulled in front of the other and slammed on his brakes.  A woman driving one of the motorcycles was killed, and Johnson is being charged with vehicular homicide.

A Gulfport man was killed yesterday morning when he ignored the warning lights and drove around the activated crossing arms of the RR tracks on Texas Avenue near Courthouse Road.  Thomas Baker’s truck was hit on the passenger side, and pushed 50 yards down the track.

Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann is concerned that voter turnout will be extremely low for Tuesday's runoff elections. He says the primary turnout June 6th was historically low with only about 13 percent of the state's registered voters bothering to cast ballots. Next week's runoffs pit Democrats David Baria and Howard Sherman against each other for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Roger Wicker, and Michael Guest and Whit Hughes who want to be the GOP party nominee in the 3rd congressional district race.

About a month from now, sports betting will get underway at casinos around the Magnolia State. The Mississippi Gaming Commission gave its approval yesterday to rules governing the now legal type of gambling. The action follows a May ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that lifted a ban on sports gambling nationwide.
