A homeless man is facing charges in a machete attack Monday along Beach Boulevard in Biloxi. Bernard Matheny and the victim—who is also homeless—apparently knew each other, but there’s no word on a motive. The victim was treated at the hospital.
A motorcyclist tumbled off the I-110 Bridge early last night. He was headed south on the interstate when he hit a wall, and fell from the bridge trying to exit onto H90. The westbound lanes were shut down while emergency crews responded to the accident.
Attorney General Jim Hood's office is getting involved in the controversy over a two-million-dollar access road leading to Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves' residential subdivision in Flowood. Letters sent to Reeves, the Mississippi Department of Transportation and the State Legislative Budget Office indicate the probe is focused on claims of political pressure made to get the road built. Reeves calls the move by Hood "grandstanding" and "political games."
Mississippi's largest National Guard unit is getting settled into its mission in the Middle East. The 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team is now working in nine different countries providing a military deterrent against threats throughout the region. The 155th is the first National Guard unit to be given this responsibility as part of Operation Spartan Shield. Deputy Brigade Commander Lieutenant Colonel Jason Nelson says one of the biggest adjustments has been getting acclimated to the heat. The temperature has already hit 125 in some of the locations where those Mississippi soldiers are deployed.
