Flags are still flying at half staff in Pascagoula in honor of former Police Chief Michael Whitmore.  He passed away Tuesday afternoon at the age of 70.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for the veteran law enforcement officer at 1 this afternoon at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

About 40 union workers at the Coca Cola Plant in Ocean Springs are manning a picket line in shifts.  They went on strike yesterday in a contract dispute with the distribution facility. The Teamsters 991 members say the new operators are trying to roll back their pay. This strike is one of four others happening in the company. The others are at branches all located in South Alabama.

Some NFL players are still protesting during the national anthem as the first full preseason week gets underway.

The Who Dat Nation should be in good spirits this morning.  The Saints beat the Jaguars last night 24-20. 

NOAA is revising their hurricane season predictions.  Forecasters had expected to see between 10 and 16 named storms this year, five to nine of them hurricanes, and up to four major hurricanes.  But conditions have changed, and they’ve dropped that to between 9 and 13 named storms, 4-7 reaching hurricane strength, and the number of major storms has dropped to between none and two.

As another work week wraps up, gas prices across Mississippi remain high but are holding mostly steady. The average price of regular remains in the ballpark of two-57 a gallon, the same as last Friday with only a fraction of a cent variations over the past week. Triple-A says the fuel was averaging around two-10 a gallon a year ago today.

Last week she was placed on administrative leave after a vote of no-confidence, and today Beth Poff no longer holds the title of executive director for the Jackson Zoo. Her resignation was announced yesterday by leaders of the zoo's board of directors. Poff had admitted to using state bond money allocated for infrastructure improvements to fund the payroll and other unqualified zoo-related expenses.
