Pentagon Chief: Taliban "Elements" Interested In Talks

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis says some members of the Taliban are interested in talking with Afghanistan's government.  Mattis told reporters traveling with him to Afghanistan today that the U.S. is picking up signs that some elements within the terrorist organization are ready to explore peace talks with the government.  Mattis said his visit to Kabul is to assess recently increased U.S. military operations and the chances of reconciliation between the Afghan government and the Taliban.

Mattis said the victory the U.S. is looking for after more than 16 years in Afghanistan is a political reconciliation, not a military victory.
