Which are the safest cities in MS? Furloughed workers getting fed.

A few of the top stories we discussed this morning:

A new study is out that ranks the ten safest cities in Mississippi.  It comes from the National Council for Home Safety and Security and is primarily based on cities where the least amount of violent and non-violent crimes per one-thousand people have occurred.  Recent FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics were used to develop the rankings.  Madison was ranked the safest city, Oxford placed fifth and Oceans Springs tenth.

President Trump says he'll make his State of the Union address when the government shutdown is over.  His official announcement came after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi canceled next week's address, saying it shouldn't happen until the government is funded again.  The Senate is expected to vote today on the president's proposal to end the shutdown.  The proposal would fund government agencies affected by the shutdown through September, and would also provide funding for a border wall.  Trump has promised to veto any bill that does not include funding for a border wall.

The Union that represents air traffic controllers, pilots and flight attendants is warning the government that the shutdown is a danger to air safety.  In a joint statement, the unions said "we cannot even calculate the level of risk currently at play, nor predict the point at which the entire system will break."  Air traffic controllers, many who often work overtime on a regular basis, are being forced to work without pay because of the shutdown.  Union leaders say its unreasonable for aviation professionals to work without pay, and urge Congress and President Trump to end the shutdown.
