The failed push to lower the federal voting age to 16, an amendment that would have added millions of new voters, now has America talking. The proposed measure failed Thursday, with only one Republican voting for it and nearly half of the Democrats voting against it. A group named "Vote 16 U-S-A" is still pushing for the change, citing data from Austria where the voting age is 16. They say another benefit is schools are pushed to focus on civics education. Four cities in the U-S already let 16-year-olds vote in local elections and 25 states allow 17-year-olds to vote in primary elections and caucuses if they'll be 18 on election day.

Funeral services for D.D. Cvitanovich will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 at the Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home. Friends can visit from noon until the time of the service, interment will follow at the Biloxi City Cemetery with full military and police honors. The Korean War Veteran's tenure in public service spanned more than 3 decades. He was a former MS Highway Patrol Chief of Patrol who later became the Chief of the Biloxi Police Dept. Cvitanovich was 86.

It appears the odds of state employees and teachers getting pay hikes during the current session of the Mississippi Legislature are a bit improved with the latest revenue report. D-Journal.com reports that tax collections for February were more than 110-million-dollars above the amount collected during the same period last year. This could prompt legislative leaders to revise the revenue estimate for the year upward, and that could lead to the approval of the much sought-after pay increases before state lawmakers adjourn for the session.

A suspect in the shooting of a teenage girl Friday night in Gulfport is behind bars with his bond set at a quarter-million-dollars. Police have charged 20-year-old Montedrique Magee with aggravated assault manifesting in extreme indifference to human life. The 16-year-old victim was found shot in the head in the 16-thousand-block of Crestview Drive. At last word, she was in critical condition.

The top-seeded women's basketball team at Mississippi State walks away the winner of Sunday's SEC Tournament Championship game played in Greenville, South Carolina. It's the Bulldogs first-ever SEC title win and came at the expense of the Arkansas Razorbacks who lost to Mississippi State 101-70. The team was led by Teaira McCowan who scored 24 points, had 14 rebounds and was named SEC Player of the Year. Bulldogs' Coach Vic Shaefer and his team were barely visible through the downpour of confetti during the trophy presentation on the court of Bon Secours Wellness Arena yesterday afternoon.
