State troopers will be out in full force this holiday weekend making sure everyone reaches their destination safely.Ā The Mississippi Highway Patrol says the 2019 Memorial Day enforcement period begins tonight at midnight.Ā They'll be on the lookout for reckless and speeding drivers, as well as checking for proper seat belt use.Ā MHP says it investigated 156 crashes over the holiday weekend last year.Ā The enforcement period ends Monday at midnight.Ā

A dangerous heat wave is expected to bake the southeastern part of the country this Memorial Day weekend.Ā The heat wave, which experts are calling a "death ridge," could break temperature records all the way from Alabama to Virginia.Ā In weather, a "ridge" is an area of high pressure that blocks clouds from forming and this one is bringing scorching temperatures along with it.Ā Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90's to low 100's, without any shade from clouds or relief from rain.Ā Some of the temperature records on track to be broken stem from the 1800's.Ā Weather experts say the duration of this heat wave makes it life threatening as it isn't expected to let up until early June.Ā Experts recommend folks stay hydrated and wear light, loose fitting clothing to keep cool.Ā

Just in time for Memorial Day Weekend grilling ā¦ While Americans eat 20 billion hot dogs a year, a survey found that 43% of us are too scared to find out what's in them. The survey found that women are more afraid of hot dog ingredients than men. 50% of women are scared to find out what's in hot dogs, compared to 37% of men.Ā The survey also found that 33% of Americans avoid hot dogs because they think theyāre made with low-quality meat, chemicals and artificial ingredients, and that 70% of Americans wish hot dogs were made with fewer ingredients. Speaking of hot dogs ā¦ Itās officially hot dog season. According to the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council, hot dog season begins on Memorial Day and ends on Labor Day. And where are a lot of those hot dogs eaten? Ballparks, of course. Major League Baseball fans are expected to consume about 18.3 million hot dogs and nearly four million sausages this season.

The World War Two Memorial in Washington, DC needs immediate repair to fix apparent cracks, according to the National Park Service.Ā The largest is a 20-foot hairline fracture on a granite pillar on the Atlantic side of the monument.Ā Officials say while the cracks don't yet pose a safety risk, they are a blemish on a national landmark.

Mississippi State joins Ole Miss in the loser's bracket of the Southeastern Conference baseball tournament after being shut out 1-to-nothing by Vanderbilt last night.Ā Ā State will play LSU tonight in an elimination game. The Rebels take on Arkansas this afternoon with the loser of that game also going home.
Southern Miss has earned a day off at the Conference USA tournament in Biloxi. The Golden Eagles beat Marshall 10-to-5 last night to remain undefeated. They'll play again tomorrow morning.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange [[ ah-SONGE ]] is being charged with espionage.Ā Federal prosecutors filed over a dozen new charges against Assange Thursday.Ā The Justice Department says Assange violated the Espionage Act by conspiring with former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to illegally get secret government documents.Ā He faces ten-years in prison on each count.Ā Assange is currently in British custody.Ā Ā
Movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has reportedly reached a 44-million dollar settlement with women who accused him of sexual assault.Ā The Wall Street Journal says board members of his former film studio and the New York Attorney General's office have reached an agreement.Ā The deal will reportedly include 30-million dollars in cash for the alleged victims as well as former company employees, creditors and lawyers. Weinstein still faces criminal charges in connection with two alleged attacks in 2013 and 2006.
