Liquor-Infused Ice Cream Now Legal in New York

Proving that 2020 can't be ALL bad - New York has given the go-ahead to ice-cream manufactures to begin producing liquor-infused ice cream.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation on Monday authorizing the manufacture and sale of liquor-infused frozen deserts. The bill is meant to help kickstart the state's economy - especially for dairy workers, liquor producers, restaurants and retailers who have seen an "increasing consumer demand" for alcoholic ice cream.

"The craft beverage industry has experienced explosive growth in New York and with that comes a responsibility to advance regulations that help ensure long-term viability, protect consumers and provide farmers with opportunities to increase their business," Governor Cuomo said. "This legislation will further grow a burgeoning industry and boost small businesses while helping to put them on a path of sustained growth that empowers both producers and consumers."

Ice cream containing wine, beer or hard cider was already legal in the Empire State, however, the new bill will allow harder alcohols, such as whiskeys, bourbons or vodkas to be infused in everyone's favorite sweet summer treat.

According to a news release about the measure, the frozen desserts will be allowed to contain a maximum of 5% alcohol by volume. The new ice creams will have to display the same labeling and warnings that are present on other alcoholic products.

State Senator Rachel May praised the new law, saying it would go a long way in boosting businesses and tourism in the state.

"New Yorkers are already able to responsibly enjoy beer, wine, and cider infused ice creams. Thanks to this bill, vendors will now be able to offer their customers another delicious treat. This legislation will help New York's dairy industry and our liquor and craft beverage industries at the same time," said May. "I am very grateful to the Governor for signing this into law, and I look forward to sharing some maple bourbon ice cream with him at next year's State Fair!"
