REAL ID Deadline Delayed Until October 2021 Due to Coronavirus

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf

The Trump Administration is extending the REAL ID deadline by one year due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The original deadline was scheduled for October 1st of this year. The Department of Homeland Security has determined a twelve-month delay is required, making the new deadline October 1st, 2021.

In a statement, Acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf said the response to the spread of the coronavirus in the U.S. "necessitates a delay in this deadline." He added that the department wants to "remove any impediments to response and recovery efforts."

The REAL ID program passed after the September 11th terrorist attacks. The program seeks to make all state-issued identification more secure with uniform national standards.
